I received a $100 'Vanilla" brand Visa gift card. When trying to use it discovered ~$30 had been deducted in monthly fees.
In type that is purposefully very small & difficult to read, they can deduct $1.50 per month after 9 months. Upon further investigation, I found that these "terms" are subject to change. The new terms were a monthly fee of $2.50 after 6 months. These cards are designed as gifts so how would a recipient know about the changed terms?
They wouldn't, & the companies issuing the cards could care less as this is how they make profits. MY ADVICE; AVOID VANILLA VISA GIFT CARDS, give checks or cash instead. Also be very wary of any credit card type gift card as I'm sure they are quite similiar in their deceptive consumer unfriendly terms.
Most people don't use these gifts right away, so if you have no other choice advise recipient to check terms carefully & try to use quickly. Many also have activation fees so you lose $ right away too.
